## Summary

Richard Nordström built a career at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and BCG until his mother fell ill and, at thirty-four, he found himself organising an elderly parent's daily life alongside his job. Helppy grew out of that, with the mission that the family carer is not left alone. The core of the episode is a diagnosis of what is broken in Finnish home care: carers rotate so that nobody knows who is visiting, the family member has to integrate five separate services and pay five separate invoices, and reporting is still done in a paper notebook. Nordström explains how a neighbourhood model based on the Dutch Buurtzorg approach was profitable within three months without outside funding, and why it gave way to a platform-like hybrid in which the same helper makes 95 per cent of visits. The funding round, which brought in Icebreaker.vc, Wolt's Elias Aalto and Kry's Johannes Schildt, was easy, he says, because he had spent 700 hours in the field himself in the first year. He also argues that after the household tax deduction private help costs less than the municipal client fee, and that Finland is in fact a leader in home care.

## The customer nobody designed for

Finnish home care is organised around the person receiving it. What Nordström found, doing it himself as his mother's carer and legal guardian, is that the load lands on the family member who has to assemble five providers, five customer-service desks and five invoices into something resembling a life — and that person is not a customer of anything, which is why nobody has designed for them. Older people themselves rarely ask for help: those born before the war and in the 1940s expect to manage alone.

## Rotation destroys the product

If a different carer arrives each time, the service delivers a task rather than a relationship, and the relationship was the part with value in it. Helppy began with neighbourhood teams on the Dutch Buurtzorg pattern, profitable within three months, and then rebuilt itself as a hybrid of local matching and a conventional employer so that the same helper makes 95 per cent of visits. The switch landed just before covid, and because helpers go from their own homes straight to the customer instead of gathering to collect paper lists, exposure stayed low.

## Seven hundred hours

The founder worked the shifts and knew the first hundred customers by name. Whatever one concludes about the company, that is a different epistemic position from the one most sector critiques are written from, and he credits it, rather than his banking CV, for a round that came together quickly: Icebreaker.vc plus two unicorn founders as angels. Asked whether the terms included a threefold liquidation preference, he does not say.

## Finland as the benchmark

The episode's least expected claim is that Finland is already among the most developed countries in elderly care — second in Europe on social-care spending after the Netherlands, an early privatiser of home care — and that the export case is a better version of the Finnish model sold as a top-up on whatever basic care a municipality or insurer pays for. Municipal help is thin, at most three or four fifteen-minute visits a day in Helsinki, and by his account private help is cheaper after the household tax deduction.
